Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Tour

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) is a premier independent, nonprofit research and development organization using multidisciplinary services to provide solutions to some of the world’s most challenging scientific and engineering problems. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, our client-focused, client-funded organization occupies more than 1,500 acres, providing more than more than 2.4 million square feet of laboratories, test facilities, workshops, and offices for more than 3,200 employees who perform contract work for government and industry clients. Learn more about SwRI here.

SwRI is opening up their campus to PATRAM attendees at the PATRAM 2025 Symposium. There are two tours available – one on Tuesday, July 29th and one on Wednesday, July 30th; however, each is limited to 45 people, so sign-up early!

IMPORTANT: This tour is open to U.S. Citizens only.

Fire Technology
As a nationally recognized testing lab, SwRI’s Fire Technology Department provides standard, nonstandard and custom fire detection, resistance, suppression, flammability, smoke and toxicity testing services for government and commercial clients. The team provides computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fire modeling and is also equipped to conduct full-scale evaluations of everything from furniture and bedding for a child’s bedrooms to batteries, fuel tanks and industrial equipment. SwRI operates one of the largest environmentally friendly fire research facilities in the world, with more than 40,000 square feet of lab space, equipped with pollution abatement and wastewater collection systems. SwRI’s Fire Technology Department celebrated 75 years of fire technology R&D in 2024.

Physical Environmental Testing Laboratory
In SwRI’s Physical Environmental Testing Laboratory, engineers simulate everything from the vibrations of an earthquake to the effects of wind and rain exposure on equipment. The laboratory operates under an ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and features personnel who are specially trained in nuclear component qualification. SwRI adheres to national standards, such as ASTM, IEEE, ASME, MIL-Spec, IEC, ISO, Telcordia, UL, NEBS and ETS, and offers a one-stop shop for simulating and evaluating a variety of products in multiple physical environments. Our engineers can design and tailor testing to help our clients avoid costly performance issues and ensure the safety and reliability of their products.

Intelligent Systems
SwRI’s Intelligent Systems research and development spans aerospace, automotive, human performance and robotics. We’re solving 21st century challenges with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers and developers that are committed to the betterment of humankind through science and technology. Our researchers are helping to drive automation for manufacturing and applying artificial intelligence to agriculture, automotive, defense, transportation, sports and medicine. We’re experts in high reliability systems and provide mission-critical systems for a variety of industries, offering advanced cybersecurity, software development, intelligence, data analytics and system engineering.

If the minimum number of attendees do not register for the tour by June 23rd, it will be cancelled. If the tour is cancelled registrants will be notified and a refund will be issued.

A companion registration ticket for PATRAM 2025 includes access to Companion Breakfasts, Monday through Friday, 8:30 - 9:30 AM, and the Opening Welcome Reception. The Banquet Dinner is an additonal fee and can be added separately.

San Antonio Trolley Tour – Tuesday, July 29 | $120 each
Minimum Attendees: 15

Get to know San Antonio through one of their most popular tours, the Old Town Trolley Tour. More than just a sightseeing tour, it is a fun and educational adventure as your trolley conductor provides an entertaining narration that includes little known facts and behind-the-scenes tips. This is the best way to see “The Alamo City.” Traveling through the streets of San Antonio, you’ll get a close-up view of the sites that make this city one of the top visited places in the United States. San Antonio hosts the Alamo, Historic Market Square, and The Spanish Governor’s Palace, just to name a few.

Alamo After Hours - Tuesday, July 29 | $100
Minimum Attendees: 20
Retrace the footsteps of the past in the solitude of an Alamo after-hours tour. Your exclusive visit will include a tour of the Church and the Alamo Exhibit in the Ralston Family Collections Center after normal operating hours. The after-hours tour offers an unforgettable experience for out-of-town guests, corporate groups, private ceremonies and receptions, and more.

Schedule: 6:00 - 7:00 PM

Natural Bridge Caverns Tour - Wednesday, July 30 | $100
Minimum Attendees: 20
The largest cavern in the state, you will journey takes you through huge rooms, spectacular formations, and
state-of-the-art lighting. This private group tour will go on the Discovery Tour which includes, breathtaking views around every corner, this tour is a journey through the first chambers discovered at Natural Bridge Caverns. Informed tour guides will walk you through the cavern with educational stops along the way. These awe inspiring and spectacular natural formations, including soda straws, flowstone, stalagmites and stalactites have grown over thousands of years – and thanks to our ongoing stewardship, continue to grow today. Note: this tour does include stairs. Transportation to/from the hotel and caverns is included.
